christmas aesthetic: modern with a touch of farm

This Christmas I had a whole new space to decorate for the holidays, so of course we started early. I pulled out my old favorites to mix with the bags of shiny new things I picked up in early November at Target and Home Goods and vowed to take photos this year so when next year rolls around I will know what I have/need. Because you always need something new, right?

I’m calling this modern with a touch of farm. I pulled inspiration first and foremost from Anthropologie - my very favorite place to take in the magic of the season. I did a lot of Pinterest searches for Anthro holiday, boho Christmas, modern Christmas. If this is your style too, here’s a few tips I used to pull this look off:

  • Purchase holiday decor that compliments your home decor.

  • Try a softer color palette - soften the green and red with mint and blush accents.

  • Mix glitter and shine with natural woods and distressed finishes.

  • Mercury glass - lots of mercury glass!

  • Work in white and gold pieces to balance the color and keep the decor from looking too busy.

  • White lights - i’m all for colored lights outside, but if you’re going for a softer color palette the colored lights inside will throw it off.

  • Don’t be afraid to take down a piece of artwork temporarily and replace it with a fun holiday sign.

  • If your tree is placed in a major walkway, or if you’re just going for a more modern look, consider a tree collar instead of a tree skirt.

  • Personal truth: I love a flocked tree but I also feel like we have to have a real tree. In a perfect world I’d have both - but for now we stick with the real one (noble fir only - if you know, you know) and a flocked garland to give me a touch of snow.
